Yoru to Umi
I really enjoy Yoru to Umi. It's got craaazy art, a balance between the reality and the dreamlike is constant and makes reading it feel like you're underwater. Funny how that works out with the topic being the ocean.
It for sure is less of a straightforward story, and more like a constant dialogue between the two main charcters, navigating their relationship with each other in a very youthful way. I think seeing this on Dynasty scans dot com may lead you to think that the fascination that the characters will lead to your usual sugary sweet yuri, but that same balance of the tone leads to them leaving on their own paths. Aya, chased her inevitable path of life in the water after she graduates and she doesn't see Tsukiko until a brief moment years later.
Along with the two protagonists, there are a few side characters that have their own chapters. I can kinda foresee the annoying remarks about them feeling out of place and to get back to the main two, but I think they make the whole work feel a bit more in line with something like Ikkoku Nikki. Actually the two have a lot in common... but I think they are both going for similar angles on the same topic, which Yoru to Umi does just more briefly.
I do like the way that they find themselves at similar points later in life, as water was what drew them together, but for different reasons, same as their jobs.
Anyway, I enjoy it, the visuals stuck with me and I think the author, Goumoto, had a clear thing to say that they did well. woohoo.
